#MaybeHeDoesn’tHitYou

9/16/2016

The hashtag #MaybeHeDoesn’tHitYou sheds some light on emotional abuse that often does not get the attention it needs. Sometimes, we think that abuse is only physical, but that may only be one part of it. We tend to minimize emotional abuse by saying things such as, “at least they don’t hit you,” or “things could be so much worse.” The fact is that emotional abuse is just as serious as physical and sexual abuse. Emotional abuse is defined as any act which may diminish a person’s sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth. Some examples of emotional abuse are:

  •  Name calling or insults; making fun of physical appearance, mental health, and insecurities
  • Threats and intimidation
  • Ignoring or excluding
  • Yelling or swearing
  •  Isolating

Although emotional abuse might not leave these physical marks, there are many long term effects of the abuse. If one person creates all the rules and boundaries, it could lead to power and control over their partner. Keep in mind that victims do not only suffer at the time they’re being hurt. The effects of abuse can cause long-term consequences such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Medical problems
  • Stress
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Drug/alcohol abuse
  • Failure at school or work

It’s also important to note that although the hashtag says “he”, men are the victims of emotional abuse as well. In fact, men have responded by the hashtag #MaybeSheDoesn’tHitYou.
