What is Human Trafficking?
When you hear someone say “Human Trafficking” what do you think? Typically, the first thing that someone thinks about is sexual exploitation, but what they do not realize is that, sexual exploitation is only one type of trafficking. Human Trafficking can be defined as modern day slavery; someone who is forced to work with little to no pay. What do you think some other form of human trafficking are?
Some different forms are:
- Farm labor
- House Maids
- Food Services
- Submissive Marriages
- Massage Parlors
- Sexual Exploitation
Human Trafficking is a federal crime, and the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. What many do not realize is that human trafficking can be classified as domestic violence. Usually a trafficker comes in the form of a boyfriend or friend. They gain the victims trust through a “grooming” process. This then makes the victim feel obligated to do “special favors” for the trafficker. They conclude with the “turnout” where the victim is forced into the services mentioned above.
Keep in mind that traffickers search for specific characteristics in a person to help easily manipulate and force them into slavery. Some of these victims could be homeless youth, runaways, foster care youth, or individuals in group homes. It may seem as though these are easier targets, but this is not the only way traffickers find their victims. Victims can be anyone from any type of background.
